ACI EUROPE welcomes removal of Air Passenger Tax by Dutch government

Air Transport News 27Mar.09

Reacting to the formal decision by the Dutch government to abolish their Air Passenger Tax, ACI EUROPE – the voice of Europe’s airports - warmly welcomed the news. The association’s crisis strategy Empower Europe’s Airports to Boost Economic Recovery released a fortnight ago, clearly calls for the abolition of national taxes on aviation.

The air passenger tax originally introduced in the Netherlands as a so-called ‘environmental’ tax, was a purely economic measure, that had little or no benefit to the environment. Over time, it actively discouraged passenger traffic and additional airline services, constraining the positive contribution that Dutch airports make to the communities they serve and the entire Dutch economy.

Similar taxes remain in place in the UK and Ireland.

Olivier Jankovec, Director General ACI EUROPE, commented "This is a genuine recognition of the significant role that air travel and airports in particular, can play in economic recovery. This latest decision by the Dutch government, coupled with the cancellation of similar plans by the Belgian government late last year, clearly demonstrates that they understand that taxing aviation is poor economic policy. I hope that the governments in the UK and Ireland are taking note.”
